When I get a chance over the next few weeks, I'll explain why I want to become a Italian dual citizen, how I'm eligible, the general process, and the documents needed. The documents - ugh!! I eventually get around to posting a list of everything I need and where I'm at in that process. I have almost all the docs I need, problem is not one doc is ready to go. Some are in the wrong form, some are not certified copies, and most need to be corrected. I'm setting small goals for myself, to prevent becoming overwhelmed.
Most of my vital record documents come from the state of Illinois. I have last name discrepancies on all my vital records. It seems that my family's surname sometimes ended with an "o" and sometimes with an "a." Sometimes they used the Italian first name, sometimes they used their Americanized first name, and even sometimes used nick names as a middle names. Problem here is that I'm applying thru the NYC consulate and I'm told they are extremely picking about all names matching.
So I'm going to start here. It appears that Illinois has a easy process for correcting vital records. We'll see, fingers crossed.
I have 4 records that need to be corrected with Illinois:
1. My GGM Death Certificate
2. My GGF Death Certificate
3. My GF Delayed Record of Birth
4. My GF Death Certificate
Illionois breaks their corrections down into "Major" and "Minor" corrections. It appears no documentation is needed for a minor correction and they list what is needed for each type of major correction. This appears to be easy, just follow the time consuming steps one by one and collect all the proof. My ultimate goal is to have an "AKA" added to each person's surname. That way there is a link between all the name discrepancies, proof to the Italian consulate that these are in fact all the same people. While I'm at it, I'm gonna to try to have missed information filled in.
This is what I'm trying to fix:
Minor Corrections:
1. GGM Death Certificate - Add AKA for her first name
2. GGF Death Certificate - Add AKA for first name, Add middle name, Add mother's first name, Change father's first name, Add father's and mother's middle names
3. GF Birth Record - Add AKA for first name of mother and father, Add father's middle name
4. GF Death Certificate - Add AKA for first name of father, Add father's middle name, Add Social Sercurity number, Add mother's first name including an AKA
Major Corrections:
1. GGM Death Certificate - Add AKA for last name, Add AKA for husband's first and last name, Add middle name for husband.
2. GGF Death Certificate - Add AKA for last name, Add mother's last name
3. GF Birth Record - Add AKA for last name, Add AKA for father's last name
4. GF Death Certificate - Add AKA for last name, Change maiden name of spouse, Add AKA to father's last name, Add last name for mother
What I basically need to prove is that they all used multiple names throughout their lives and that they are in fact the same people. It's going to mean a lot of copying records and a lot of paper to send. What I'm trying to decide now is if I should send everything together or should I send 4 separate envelopes. I'm afraid of overwhelming a county worker and getting a rejection letter. On the other hand, everything sent at once my help prove my point.
Below are the forms I'm using. I'll be putting all my forms on Pinterest; https://www.pinterest.com/MJLLN/seeking-italian-dual-citizenship/
This is really a nice informative blog in which you discuss about getting citizenship in Italy and process how to apply for getting citizenship in Italy.
